DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD
PURPOSE: To publicly recognize and honor outstanding alumni of Norfolk State University who have enhanced the prestige of the University through leadership in their vocation, community, state or nation where recognition has been granted on a state, national or international level. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is an honorary award to acknowledge alumni that may or may not be members of the Association.
I. Criteria
A. Personal Qualifications
1. Attended Norfolk State University, or any of its predecessors, for not less than two semesters.
2. Exhibits excellent character (including, but not limited to moral and professional standards, honesty, dependability, open-mindedness and flexibility).
3. Active in community and/or civic affairs.
B. Professional Qualifications
1. Recognized in his or her chosen field for outstanding achievement(s) or service.
2. Promotes a positive image of Norfolk State University in his or her profession.
II. Policies
A. Application and information packages are available in the Alumni Relations Office, the Alumni Association and Chapters.
B. Nomination packages shall be mailed to Norfolk State University Alumni Association Awards Committee, P.O. Box 12842, Norfolk, VA 23451, and the package must be postmarked on or before November 1 for the May presentation, and on or before May 1 for the December presentation.
C. The Awards Committee will evaluate all applications using the procedures outlined in paragraph III - Procedures and forward its recommendation to the Board of Directors. Applications will be rank ordered using the scoring system outlined in section III – Procedures.
D. The Awards Committee will screen all applications for completeness and compliance with postmark deadlines.
E. The Awards Committee will forward applications and recommendations for Distinguished Alumnus to the Board of Directors for final approval on ore before February 1 for the May presentation, and on or before June 1 for the December presentation.
F. The Board of Directors will vote on the committee’s recommendation for the May nomination at the December meeting and for the December nomination at the July meeting.
G. The Board of Directors reserves the right to withhold the Award in any year.
H. The Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented during the May and December Alumni Banquets.
I. Awards committee members nominated for Distinguished Alumnus shall not participate in the evaluation process for the “Distinguished Alumnus Award”
III. Procedures
A. The Awards Committee will determine the validity of each application. The applications will be screened for completeness. A complete application must contain the name and address of the nominee and be signed by the nominator. Applications should list examples of how the nominee meets the criteria. A valid application must be complete and postmarked on or before November 1 or on or before May 1.
B. Each application will be scored using the enclosed evaluation score sheet. The committee will establish a rank order of the nominations based on their scores. The committee will retain the score sheets for a period of 60 days after the presentation of the award.
C. The Awards Committee will compile the scores, establish rank order and forward original copies of all valid applications as a component of the committee’s report to the second vice president by February 1 for the May presentation and by June 1 for the December presentation.
D. Award applications must be received for the current award period. Therefore, an application cannot be held over and used in another award cycle.
E. The application must be sent to all Committee members for review and scoring. The NSUAA budget must support administration cost.
F. All committee members are required to participate in the review and scoring of applications.
G. If committee members are not participating in the process they will be asked to resign.
H. The Awards Committee is responsible for obtaining the plaque for the Distinguished Alumnus Award. All other honors will be the responsibility of the Alumni Association and the Alumni Relations Office.
IV. Honors
A. The honoree will receive an engraved plaque. The name of the honoree, the award’s title, the Association’s name, and the date the award is presented.
B. An article will be published in the Alumni Newsletter noting the award and achievements.
C. The honoree will receive a letter of recognition/appreciation from the President of the University and the President of the Norfolk State University Alumni Association.
The honoree’s name and the date that the award is presented will be exhibited on a plaque that will be exhibited in the Alumni Relations Office.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD
PURPOSE: To publicly recognize and honor outstanding alumni of Norfolk State University who have enthusiastically and consistently given in an exemplary and dedicated manner of their time, energy and ideas toward the common goal to enhance the prestige of Norfolk State University. The Alumnus of the Year Award is an honorary award to acknowledge alumni that are members of the Association.
I. Criteria
A. Personal Qualifications
1. Attended Norfolk State University, or any of its predecessors, for not less than two semesters.
2. Exhibits excellent character (including, but not limited to moral and professional standards, honesty, dependability, open-mindedness and flexibility).
3. Active in community and/or civic affairs.
B. Contributions to the University and Alumni Association
1. Promotes a positive image of Norfolk State University and the Alumni Association.
2. Actively seeks to increased membership in the Association.
3. Participates in programs to increase awareness of NSU for student recruitment in the member’s local area.
4. Participates in programs that increase student retention at Norfolk State University.
5. Designed, developed or participated in a project (such as the annual Phon-a-Thon), or contacted resources to raise funds for the annual giving campaign during the fiscal year.
6. Conducted or participated in a project to communicate the University and/or Alumni Association’s programs to respective community and/or or civic concerns.
C. Professional Accomplishments
1. Received recognition in his or her chosen field.
2. Advanced his or her professional growth through formal education and professional organizations.

Alumni Association
CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD
PURPOSE: To publicly recognize, honor and encourage alumni chapters that have enthusiastically and consistently supported the mission and achieved the goals of the Norfolk State University Alumni Association while enhancing the prestige of Norfolk State University throughout the prior fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).
I. Criteria
A. Eligibility Qualifications
1. The chapter is financial with the Norfolk State University Alumni Association.
2. The chapter has been active for at least twelve months prior to being nominated for the award.
3. The chapter has at least ten financial members at the time of the nomination.
4. The chapter has donated funds (5% of its annual giving to the Alumni Fund and 10% to the Lyman Beecher Brooks Alumni Scholarship to the University one-year prior to the nomination.
5. All required reports (i.e., Membership, Annual Giving, Activity Report, etc.) submitted to the Alumni Association by the scheduled deadlines.
B. Contributions to the University
1. Participated in raising funds, providing scholarships, and recruiting students.
2. Increase chapter membership by 10 % or more during the previous year.
3. Assisted in career placements and advancements by providing information to the University’s Placement or Alumni Relations Offices, and aided those who relocated in its community.
4. Assisted the Alumni Relations Office in maintaining an up-to-date alumni database by verifying and providing accurate and updated information on chapter members.
5. Members of the chapter assisted and/or conducted University projects (e.g., conducted and/or provided names of facilitators for workshops, worked with registration).
6. Other contributions to the University not listed above (e.g., donation of computers, artwork, donation of physical property, or local community projects).
II. Policies
A. Applications shall be mailed to Norfolk State University Alumni Association Awards Committee, P. O. Box 12842, Norfolk, VA 23541 and the package must be postmarked on or before October 1.
B. All applications received will be forward to the Awards Committee immediately.
C. The Awards Committee will screen the nomination application and forward all valid applications to the Selection Committee by November 1.
D. The "Chapter of the Year Award" applications will be evaluated by a Selection Committee composed of the Director of Alumni Relations, the Chairman of the Awards Committee, the Second Vice President and two faculty and/or staff volunteers of Norfolk State University. The staff volunteers must hold a position of Assistant Director or higher.
E. The Board of Directors will select the Chapter of the Year. The Board reserves the right to withhold the Award in any year.
F. The Chapter of the Year Award will be presented during the Norfolk State University Alumni Association (NSUAA) Summer Leadership Conference held in July.
III. Procedures
A. The Awards Committee will validate each application.
B. A valid application must include the name and mailing address of the chapter, meet each of the eligibility qualifications, be signed by the nominator, the chapter president and postmarked on or before October 1.
C. The Selection Committee will score each application using the enclosed evaluations score sheet. The Selection Committee will establish a rank order of the nominations based on their scores and forward the top three (3) applications to the Board of Directors by February 1. (If three or less applications are received for this award, all valid applications will be forwarded to the Board from the Awards Committee).
D. The Board of Directors will vote on the valid applications for "Chapter of the Year" from the Selection (or Awards) Committee at the March meeting.
E. The Awards Committee is responsible for obtaining the plaque and banner for the Chapter of the Year Award". All other honors will be the responsibility of the Alumni Association and Alumni Relations Office.
IV. Honors
A. The chapter’s name and the date that the award is presented will be exhibited on a plaque that will be exhibited in the Alumni Relations Office.
B. The chapter will be presented with a banner inscribed, “NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CHAPTER OF THE YEAR” to display during the year following the presentation of the award. The banner will be transferred to the new winning chapter each year.
C. Chapter members will be recognized during “Alumni Day” as members of the “Chapter of the Year” at all sporting events during the year following the presentation of the award.
D. The chapter will be highlighted in the Alumni Newsletter.
The chapter will receive a letter of recognition/appreciation from the President of the University and the President of the Norfolk State University Alumni Association.
