Dear Campus Community:

As you are aware, the Hampton Roads area expects severe weather conditions from the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy, which is expected to affect the Commonwealth of Virginia over the weekend and into early next week. I am deeply concerned about the potential risks this storm poses to the safety of the student body and the campus community, which are my greatest priorities. I have charged my cabinet to take the necessary actions to ensure that the campus remains safe and that your needs are being met.

Given these circumstances, all Norfolk State University classes and activities will be cancelled, effective 6 p.m. this evening and continuing through Tuesday evening. Currently, classes and activities are scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. Wednesday, October 31. I strongly encourage students to leave the campus as quickly as possible and to take personal items of value. If you are a student who cannot arrange lodging, please contact your residence hall coordinator immediately.

Students who must remain on campus should immediately notify their respective residence hall director of their plans to remain on campus. Additionally, students who are traveling along with those who remain on campus should stay in contact with family or friends.

Throughout the storm, my cabinet and I will be monitoring the conditions of the surrounding areas and the conditions of the campus facilities. I encourage you to monitor NSU’s website and local broadcast media. The Office of Communications and Marketing will send updates via Send Word Now, and NSU’s Facebook and Twitter pages, which you may access via our homepage, www.nsu.edu.

Please remember that those designated as essential personnel are to check with their supervisors before leaving campus today and are expected to contact their supervisors to determine scheduled reporting times throughout the duration of the storm.

My thoughts are with all members of the University community. Please exercise good judgment and travel safely.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tony Atwater

President
