Tuesday, January 5, 2016
(NSU NEWSROOM—Dec. 10, 2015)---The NSU softball team was awarded the fall 2015 Ideal Spartan Award. The team was nominated by a staff member in the Department of Athletics due to its engagement on campus and in the surrounding community.
The team participated in various community service initiatives including donating more than 200 toys to Z104’s Stuff the Bus and Toys for Tots, cooking dinner for families at the Ronald McDonald House and volunteering across campus. The Ideal Spartan Award seeks to highlight students who contribute to the NSU community with actions that foster civility, pride, engagement, curiosity, integrity, and excellence.
The softball team’s actions align with the Spartan Code of Ethics to: “Nurture a Positive Atmosphere of Care, Concern, and Civility.” In addition to demanding extracurricular duties, the softball team still finds time to excel academically. Twelve of the 14 athletes have an established GPA of 2.8 or higher.
Heidi Cavallo, head coach of the NSU Softball team, said she is proud of her players and that the team is elated to receive the honor. She said the team works hard to stay involved on campus and around the Hampton Roads community during the academic year.
“It’s very special to receive the Ideal Spartan Award,” Cavallo said. “This award represents what being a Spartan is all about.”
