Dr. James M. Victory ’77,’85 credits a lot of his professional success to Norfolk State University. So it seemed only fitting that he would enable the Estherine J. Harding Endowed Scholarship fund to reach its $10,000 fundraising goal. Dr. Victory, who served as the keynote speaker at the scholarship’s 10th annual fundraiser, presented the committee with a $3,000 check.
“Coming from where my wife and I began to where we are now is truly a blessing, and I thank Norfolk State University for being there for us, and for being there for the countless others who have had to overcome similar or even more challenging circumstances,” Dr. Victory told the more than 100 guests in attendance. “God’s grace, my brother’s encouragement, Norfolk State University, my wife’s and my families’ support have sustained me for nearly 39 years of doing the challenging work of educating students.”
Dr. Victory serves as the Executive Director of the Governor’s School of Arts and Technology in the Appomattox, Virginia, region. The previously, retired superintendent of Petersburg City Public Schools has also held positions as superintendent of the Universal City (Missouri ) School District, principal and teacher. His wife, Deborah Paulette, is the former NSU Direct Loan Coordinator and daughter, Mekell, a Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS) scholar, both are NSU graduates.
“I really have no idea how my life would have turned out,” he said, “had I not enrolled at Norfolk State University.”
