Aramis Massenburg just missed matching his own school record in the 110 meter hurdles and Sean Holston helped the Spartans to a pair of wins at the Raleigh Relays this weekend, hosted by N.C. State.
Massenburg clocked a preliminary time of 13.64 seconds – .01 off his school record from last year’s MEAC Outdoor Championships – and ran a 13.80 in the finals to place second in his event. He was only bested by Nike-sponsored professional runner Ronnie Ash, the former NCAA national champion who ran 13.66 in the finals.
Holston cruised to a win in the invitational section of the 200 meters, posting a time of 20.97 seconds. He was one of three Spartans to place in the top five in that event, along with James Taylor and Kenneth Smith. Taylor was second in 21.18, and Smith was fourth in 21.59. Those three, along with teammate Vincent Brown, also claimed the gold in the men’s 1,600 meter sprint medley relay, finishing in 3 minutes, 18.07 seconds.
That was just the start of a strong showing for Brown. He ran a personal-best time of 1:52.25 to take fifth place in the invitational section of the 800 meters on Saturday.
Elsewhere during the meet, Josef Tessema ran a personal-best time of 14:29.35 to finish fourth in his section of the 5,000 meters. Keith Nkrumah ran times of 13.98 (prelim) of 14.05 (finals) seconds while placing fifth in the 110 hurdles, and both Robert Thrasher and John James placed in the top 10 in their sections of the high jump.
The Spartans participate in the Florida Relays next weekend in Gainesville, Fla.
